When the Going Gets Tough, the Tough Writes a Post About It

WARNING: This post is less about sunshine and puppies and more for the purpose of documenting a pretty craptastic week... in the hopes it can only get better.

BOO!
Finn continues to have a rough time at school. His teachers and his parents are looking in to it.

BOO!
Yesterday, my purse gets stolen. Out of my car. In my driveway. **
The only nice bag I've ever had in my life, my iPod, 4 credit cards, my driver's license, my checkbook, my Kohl's & Victoria Secret cards, all my various shades of lipstick, my cute antique business card holder, and a mix of restaurant & movie gift cards - all gone.
We spent the day cancelling accounts, filing fraud alerts on our credit reports, filling out bank paperwork, and getting a new license (whose photo was nowhere near as good as the one that was stolen.)

YAY!
The thief missed a few things... another iPod, some beloved CD's, and a substantial gift card to the mall were all overlooked. He/She was also nice enough to pull some office paperwork out of my purse before they took it, so that will come in handy. This is me trying to find a positive thing.

BOO!
Like everyone, it is becoming increasingly apparent that the holidays will be slim around here.

** FAQs:
Yes, I know it was stupid for me to leave my purse in the car.
No, I don't usually do that.
Yes, I meant to go back and get my stuff out of the car after I got home from work, but the boys were fussy & hungry and I only had so many arms to get the backpacks, coats, squirmy Eli, and car keys shuffled into the house.
No, I have NEVER left my purse in an unlocked car in my driveway before.
Yes, we usually park in the garage but there's stuff we're taking to Goodwill packed in there at the moment.
No, I don't feel entirely safe in my own home after this happened 3 yards away from where my family was sleeping.
And Yes, it only takes one stupid mistake for some bonehead jerk to steal your identity by using your credit card to buy a disposable cell phone at 2:30AM.
(Also, Yes - I know it could have been much worse.)

My purse got stolen in a locked car in the driveway of friends at a Sunday School Party and we were all in the Living Room. IT STINKS!!! BTW...my purse was shoved up under the seat in a locked vehicle, so apparently thieves KNOW where to look. Sorry you had such a bad week. Cuz Kat

Oh, I am so sorry. I know that stinks.

My purse was stolen from the YMCA parking lot at 5am two weeks before Christmas of 2005. I can remember it exactly because, it was one week before we flew to California for Christmas(needed new id FAST), took my mind off of Christmas (first one without mom), it was cold (no passenger side window), It was lean (no new credit cards in time for shopping). But the stupid thief didnt realize my cute Kate Spade bag (thank you ebay) was worth $$ and he left it in the stairwell!

Hang in there and realize it was a lesson learned. And liek you said it could have been worse, was your garage door opener in the car?

I'm sorry. I did the same thing a few years ago. Left my purse in the car... First time ever... Getting the kids out of car after a Christmas party... Purse stolen out of car. And it happened 2 days before our vacation to Cancun! All my credit cards and my ID gone. It sucks. But so does karma. The thief will get his.

"The sun'll come out
Tomorrow
Bet your bottom dollar
That tomorrow
There'll be sun!

Just thinkin' about
Tomorrow
Clears away the cobwebs,
And the sorrow
'Til there's none!

When I'm stuck a day
That's gray,
And lonely,
I just stick out my chin
And Grin,
And Say,
Oh! YOU GET THE PICTURE....

Sorry, love you.

Incredible re: purse thief. Good that s/he took the office paperwork...perhaps they can craft a memo in their spare time??? Geez...what is the world coming to. I've had mine stolen out of a locked verhicle and under the seat. Nightmares do end. I wish you that end!!

Don't allow anyone to make you feel guilty about the purse being stolen. As other people mentioned, it happens all of the time from both locked & unlocked vehicles. I think we've all left our purses in the car before. Hell, I've been known to leave the keys in the door if I'm carrying in groceries or other cumbersome items. It happens to e-v-e-r-y-o-n-e.

I am sorry they violated your sense of safety. As someone who was mugged right outside of my very front door, I understand that anxiety. Allow it to make you more vigilant and less afraid if at all possible.

Since that was your first nice bag, you'll just have to replace it w/something even more fun! Do consider filing an insurance claim b/c it sounds as if they stole quite a haul.

Oh! I noticed a Kaboodle on your page. We also have one: http://www.kaboodle.com/s2dolife It's like shopping w/o actually spending the money.

Let's look for a strong rally next week; it sounds as if you're due one.

Miss Book Mamma, it certainly sounds like you endured a totally S*&^% week. I swear, the purse thing is always the worst...just the worst.

We are in sync with S2 on the "do not be spending precious energy feeling guilty" sentiment.

We are sending a big cyberhug your way,

This really stinks. But I agree, this is not your fault and you should not feel guilty. You know I can be a real "poopy pants" about human nature sometimes - but is this case I'll bet that you can chalk it up to freakin' teenagers with nothing better to do. All we can do is try to instill some sense of morality in our kids by that age so that they never do this to someone else.

A few years ago we were at a hockey and someone broke the read window of our friend SUV and stole Amy's purse out of the back. We were careless enough to place it there (under a blanket at least) just before we walked inside. They must have been sitting there watching. Nevertheless - I am sorry that it happened to you. Especially at this time of the year - with the holiday season getting started I bet you would prefer to think nicer things about your fellow man (and woman of course).

Partial Remedy - let your brave and manly significant other take care of the paper work - or you can get your husband to do it :) - and pour your self a nice glass of wine and repeat after me ...

"Serenity now. Serenity now. Serenity now."

See you soon.

That was a super craptastic week you just had. Hope the weekend brought sunshine to you and slaps across the face to the jerky that stole your purse.

Sorry it's been such a crappy week. Hope it gets better. And, don't feel bad -- I've left my bag in my van many a time. It could happen to anyone.
