I have just discovered Etsy and oh... I'm in love.
See???
Is that not the coolest thing ever?? It's a book purse!
(Somebody tell my husband because I'm not spoiled enough yet.)
I think I need it as a reward for canning over 42 quarts of tomatoes with my mom today. And 8 quarts of herbed vinegar. If I did the math it would even out, right?
Let's see here...
Quart jars = $16
Tomatoes, 1 bushel = $32
Homegrown peppers = about $3 worth
Cider vinegar = $7.50
Home grown herbs = about $15 worth
Garlic = $2
My time = $45.85 (@ minimum wage)
$121.35 = cost to can tomatoes
$30 = amount to buy same amount of tomatoes at Costco
$91.35 in the RED.
Hm. Well. That didn't quite work out.
Oh yeah.. then there's this:
Learning how to can tomatoes from my mom and getting some early Christmas presents done in July = PRICELESS.
There. That looks better. Etsy, here I come!!!

Ohhh...I love me some Etsy! Don't they have the most amazing items ever?
And canned tomatoes?! Even better! I haven't had those in years. That's great you got some gifts knocked out of the way!
Wow, Mama Rose would be proud of those canned tomatoes. Cute purse, yeah it's you.
Though it is rare that I make anything 'really' homemade, I do know that it tatse like a million times better than a store, worth way more than $30!
PS The tomatoes rock.... an art we could never (ever) attempt. You and your Mom? Priceless indeed. In fact, you deserve that purse which is extremely cool and at least one more, no?
:-)
TP
Well we have the same taste(I feel sorry for you)! That purse is waaay cool.
Happy POW! I love Etsy, it is full of such amazing treasures! What a great bag that is! I'd guess your tomatoes are far better than those at Costco, and the time spent with your mother, is, like you said, priceless. Hope you've already ordered yourself a bag or two!
I'm still waiting for my tomatoes to turn red. It is taking FOREVER this year!! Great work in the kitchen. You definitely deserve that adorable book purse!
I wish I could just spend all day shopping on Etsy. There is so much great and creative stuff. You definitely need that purse!
Good job on the canning. I am most impressed!
love etsy!!
and the tomatoes?!?!? wow honey!!
how can i get on your christmas list!
I hadn't heard of Etsy before, but I think I love it already! Thanks for the tip there. And loving your Christmas presents. Happy POW!
Getting some Christmas gifts sorted in July. You are a legend.
You deserve that purse just for being so organised.
I am new to etsy but I love what I have seen so far. Love that purse...hate canning. Great POW!
Love that math!!!! I just made spiced peach jam...same deal I am sure! And etsy...it's yet another addiction, lemme tell you.
Oooh, I've always wanted to learn how to can! It would have to be fore the health benefits and not the cost, though, after looking at your rundown. There must be a lot of self-satisfaction when you look at the results!
Have you read Animal, Vegetable, Miracle by Barbara Kingsolver? Your post totally reminded me of it.
And I love the fact that your house is carpeted with Hot Wheels. Mine too!
I've been shopping on Etsy for years - LOVE the selection. Be sure to look at the local artists (there are oodles) so you can save $ on shipping.
The canning. Hmmm. It certainly does look like a LOT of work, especially since I have no idea what you'd do with herbed vinegar. The canned tomatoes I'm guessing go into sauces and such?
I haven't been able to eat tomatoes since last summer when I threw them up for two days solid; there's something about having a food come up out of my nose that turns me off of it - at least for a while... ;-) I ended-up tossing all of our tomato products from the casa b/c Steve wouldn't eat them either. We emptied an entire case of V8 juice down the kitchen sink. Ewww.
Are you going to blog about Eliot's birthday???
BookMamma NEEDS the book purse!!!!! They go together like peas and carrots!!
or canned tomatoes and herbed vinegar??
